What is an Eye Emergency?
An emergency is any situation that puts your vision at risk. Contact us if you experience:
Sudden Vision Loss or double vision.
Physical Trauma or a scratch on the eye.
Foreign Objects stuck in the eye (metal, wood, or glass).
Chemical Splashes or burns.
New Flashes or Floaters in your field of vision.
Sudden Pain, swelling, or discharge.
Immediate Steps: What to Do (and Not Do)
While you wait for medical attention, follow these safety guidelines to prevent permanent damage:
DON'T rub, press on, or apply pressure to the eye.
DON'T attempt to remove an embedded object with tweezers or swabs.
DON'T use any medication or "redness relief" drops.
DO stay calm and contact your eye doctor first.
DO flush the eye gently with clean water or saline only if you have a chemical splash or loose debris (like sand).
Why Call an Optometrist First?
Most eye emergencies can be treated more quickly and accurately by an eye specialist than in a general emergency room. However, use your best judgment - if you feel you are in a life-threatening situation, head to the nearest ER or call 911 immediately.
