What is an Eye Emergency?

An emergency is any situation that puts your vision at risk. Contact us if you experience:

  • Sudden Vision Loss or double vision.

  • Physical Trauma or a scratch on the eye.

  • Foreign Objects stuck in the eye (metal, wood, or glass).

  • Chemical Splashes or burns.

  • New Flashes or Floaters in your field of vision.

  • Sudden Pain, swelling, or discharge.

Immediate Steps: What to Do (and Not Do)

While you wait for medical attention, follow these safety guidelines to prevent permanent damage:

  • DON'T rub, press on, or apply pressure to the eye.

  • DON'T attempt to remove an embedded object with tweezers or swabs.

  • DON'T use any medication or "redness relief" drops.

  • DO stay calm and contact your eye doctor first.

  • DO flush the eye gently with clean water or saline only if you have a chemical splash or loose debris (like sand).

Why Call an Optometrist First?

Most eye emergencies can be treated more quickly and accurately by an eye specialist than in a general emergency room. However, use your best judgment - if you feel you are in a life-threatening situation, head to the nearest ER or call 911 immediately.
